The
concept of shelving is to use the vertical height that filing cabinets can not
provide and also to spread media out in rows or aisles with color coding on the
side tab or end tab of the folder to help locate items and also to refile items
faster and in a more efficient manner.
Productivity
Rating: Shelving systems have a high storage density but only allow up to
a maximum of 40 file actions per hour and also use up costly excessive floor space
but do offer a high storage density and are also the most cost efficient storage
system. This translates into a fair productivity rating and will slow down active
environments where employees are constantly searching for files in rows or aisles
of shelving.

Post Shelving Systems- Four post shelving is a term used to describe
shelving that uses f[our posts. Most manufacturers refer to this shelving today
as L&T shelving. The term comes from the "L" shaped post at each
end and for intermediate sections of shelving there is a "T" shape post.
The "T" shape post saves money, as only one post is needed as two units
come together. This saves both on time to install and the cost of each shelving
unit.
Cantilever
Shelving Systems- Cantilever
Shelving is most commonly used in libraries for book storage. Cantilever shelving
is designed around two posts. In double sided units, the post is in the middle
and shelves hang outward to each side. In single face units the posts are at the
rear with the shelves hanging off the post to the front. There are no front posts
in this type of shelving. Reverse cantilever shelving is a bit different as the
post is in the front and the shelves hang to the middle on double face units and
to the rear in single face units.
Case
Style Shelving Systems- Case
style shelving systems are designed around closed end panels on each end. There
can be end posts and middle or double sided posts. These post are normally designed
to give a clean smooth look both inside and out. When assembled this type of shelving
looks like it was welded together. Thus the "case" style look.
Industrial
Shelving Systems- Industrial
Shelving Systems store the heavy items standard shelving can not handle. These
systems are designed to carry heavier load ratings per shelf. These systems are
also capable of reaching heights over 20 feet.
